Today’s tasting was a bit bittersweet, as we said farewell to our fantastic manager, Brian. He enthralled tasters with stories and his always-entertaining commentary. Good luck in your future endeavors, Brian! You’ll certainly be missed!
The identity of the Mystery Wine is:
Durigutti Bonarda 2008 (reg. $10.99) $9.89/9.34
This Argentinian Bonarda is deep in color and has aromas and flavors of blueberry and plum. The medium body is laced with toast notes and a dash of spicy tobacco. A nice, tannin backbone comes through on the finish.
Other wines in the tasting included:
Pierre Sparr Cremant d’Alsace Brut Rose NV (reg. $21.99) $19.79/18.69
This Alsatian Cremant has a light pink color with fresh aromas of strawberry and raspberry. Made in the traditional Champagne method, it has delicate bubbles and nicely integrated flavors. Lively acidity is complemented by a dry and clean finish.
Chateau des Alouettes Rose 2010 (reg. $8.99) $8.09/7.64
This rose from the Southern Rhone is made from Grenache and Syrah. A peachy pink hue and berry and citrus aromas are present. The body is rich, being less acidic and crisp than its other French counterparts. Tasty and smooth, it begs to be paired with salads and sushi.
Ca’Montini Pinot Grigio 2009 (reg. $13.99) $12.59/11.89
This Pinot Grigio is less neutral than most. It is fruit-driven, with aromas and flavors of apple, pineapple, and honey. The structure, lush texture, and crisp acids leave you with a flavorful finish.
Airfield Estates Flygirl White 2009 (reg. $12.99) SALE $9.99
This white blend of Viognier, Gewürztraminer, Roussanne, and Chardonnay pays tribute to the “Fly Girls” of WWII who transported military aircrafts from factories to airfields. Similar to these pilots, this wine is delicate, feminine, and complex with overlapping flavors of peach, pineapple, and a touch of citrus. This rich and tasty wine is a great one to pair with seafood and fruit-based dishes.
La Porte du Caillou Sancerre 2009 (reg. $19.99) $17.99/16.99
Sancerre is known for its delicious vegetal and acidic Sauvignon Blancs and this offering by La Porte du Caillou does not disappoint. Round and smooth, it displays focused grapefruit, grass and mineral notes. The wine manages to offer zesty acidity and a bit of creaminess at the same time.
Andre Brunel Cotes du Rhone 2008 (reg. $11.99) $10.79/10.19
This blend from the Southern Rhone is filled with black cherry and raspberry flavors. A nice spice and fruitcake note comes through with a light raisiny finish. The crowd absolutley loved this wine!
