Saturday Tasting -

Wines On Sale

The wines below will be on sale through Saturday, August 13th:

This sunny Saturday saw many tasters at Bell, out to enjoy the warm weather and some delicious wines--including a surprise from Japan!  After their successful foray into producing Scotch whiskey, we'd all heard the rumor that the Japanese were also embarking on a winemaking venture, but had not seen the finished product.   Well, that rumor was confirmed when Carlos arrived with two bottles of Japanese wine that he brought back from his trip to Tokyo.

The identity of the Mystery Wine is:

Don Manuel Villafane Cabernet Sauvignon (reg. $11.99) $10.79/10.19
This Argentinian Cabernet has an expressive nose of berry and violet.  On the palate, it is full-bodied with notes of black currant, spice and a touch of cedar.  Supple tannins complement a long finish.

Other wines in the tasting included:

J & H.A. Strub Gruner Veltliner 2008 (reg. $19.99) $17.99/16.99

This delicious Gruner Veltliner from the Rheinhessen displays the classic Gruner flavors of melon, green apple, and white pepper.  The nose is bright with fruit and the palate is zesty with nice acidity.  A perfect summer white!

Oracle Sauvignon Blanc 2011 (reg. $6.99) $6.29/5.94
This Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa is a pale yellow. With a nose of ripe grapefruit and a palate of fig and guava, it is an interesting and elegant wine.  This new-to-Bell white has a long, crisp finish.  A great wine to pair with Mediterranean dishes and summer salads!

Domaine de la Mordoree Cote du Rhone Rose 2010 (reg. $15.99) $14.39/13.59
This delicious Rose hails from the Southern Rhone and is composed of Grenache (40%), Syrah (30%), Cinsault (15%), Carignan (10%), and Counoise (5%).  With a rich orangey-pink hue and blackcurrant and violet aromas, this promises to be an interesting Rose.  Dom. de la Mordoree is one of Bell’s favorite Rhone producers, and it’s easy to see why.

Penfolds Rawsons Retreat Chardonnay 2009 (reg. $7.99) $7.19/6.79

Penfolds is one of Australia’s most famous producers.  Their Retreat Chardonnay sees a fair amount of oak, and it comes through in the smoky nose and buttery palate. Those who love oaked Chard will gobble this one up at it’s very low price!

Fat Bastard Pinot Noir 2009 (reg. $9.99) $8.99/8.49

This Pinot is made from grapes grown in the Herault region of the Languedoc and from the island of Corsica.  Very light in body with few tannins, this a very drinkable red.  Strawberry and raspberry comes through in the nose and on the palate, with a touch of floral note on the finish. This is a red you can chill a bit and drink on a sunny summer afternoon!

Castle Rock Merlot 2007 (reg. $10.99) $9.89/9.34

This Napa Merlot is rich and medium-bodied, with a concentrated and aromatic nose.  With layers of ripe berry and plum, mocha and spice, it also displays a hint of oak. The wine finishes long, with a nice velvety feel.

Special Additions!!

As previously mentioned, Carlos brought us these special treats from his recent travels to Japan.  Made by the excellent Sapporo brewery, they proved to be very interesting wines to challenge our tasters' palates!

Grande Polaire Koshu 2008

Koshu is a rare varietal grown exclusively in Japan.  With a light nose of tropical fruit and wet stone, this medium-bodied white is reminiscent of canned peach juice.  It has a light finish, making it a very pleasant and drinkable wine!

Grande Polaire Muscat Bailey A 2009

Made from the American hybrid grape Muscat Bailey, this red has a distinctive nose of graham crackers and stewed red fruit.  The palate has a cloying plum and red cherry note.
