Wines On Sale
The wines below will be on sale through Saturday, August 20th:
Despite the peripatetic weather, we had a lot of our regular tasters come by and enjoy our offerings. Very few could offer a guess for the mystery wine, but Connie’s unfailing palate served her well....while not guessing the varietal, she hit it on the head with a southern Italian, affordably-priced wine. Nice work, Connie!
The identity of the Mystery Wine is:
Ca’ Bea Pinot Noir 2009 (reg. $8.99) $8.09/7.64
Most people don't think of Italy as a great source for Pinot Noir, and for the most part that is true. However, the cooler mountainous regions actually favor the finicky grape. This very affordable Pinot has noticeable tart red berry aromas. The palate has rich and tart cranberry and cherry notes. This is a very fruity wine that would do well with a light chill before serving.
Other wines in the tasting included:
L. Traminer et Fils Roncier White (reg. $8.99) $8.09/7.64
Blending the two white grapes of Burgundy, Chardonnay and Aligote, this incredibly priced wine has a medium-body, soft fruits and a smooth mouth-feel. If you’re looking for a value white to pair with dinner, the Roncier is a great choice!
Zeepard Chardonnay 2009 (reg. $7.99) $7.19/6.79
This Australian Chardonnay is bright and tangy. Apple and pear are presented on the nose, with a nice peach flavor coming through on the palate. Unoaked and untouched by malolactic fermentation, this wine is juicy and lighter in style than many Chards.
Willm Gewurztraminer 2009 (reg. $13.99) $12.59/11.89
Alsace is the home of Gewurztraminer and Willm honors the grape’s long tradition with this excellent wine. It displays the characteristic lychee and quince aromas and flavors for which the varietal is known. A touch of minerality and acid makes what is essentially an off-dry wine light on the finish. This is the perfect wine to pair with spicy Asian dishes!
Poggerissi Rosato di Toscana 2009 (reg. $8.99) $8.09/7.64
Summer is made for rose (or rosato, if you’re drinking Italian). This deeply-colored wine is 100% Sangiovese, and it is readily apparent. Filled with juicy red fruit flavors bursting on the palate and a touch of acidity, this wine is very drinkable and pleasant. On its own, or paired with a light salad, this is a fantastic rose for the price.
Avery Quinn Zinfandel 2008 (reg. $11.99) $10.79/10.19
This Zinfandel from California’s expansive North Coast area has bright berry aromas and very jammy black cherry flavors. A savory texture with a medium-body make this a very smooth wine. Lacking the peppery quality of many Zins, this lighter style is more easy-drinking than most but still offers a nice tannic backbone.
Casanova di Neri Sant’ Antimo Rosso 2008 (reg. $25.99) $23.39/22.09
This Tuscan Sangiovese received 90 points from Robert Parker, and we at Bell certainly agree with his analysis. This “baby Brunello” has all of the dusty, red berry notes for which Rosso di Montalcino is known. A light herbal quality and rich, woodsy finish make this a very tasty red that makes the mouth water for traditional Italian fare!
