We trust everyone got through "Hurri-quake Week" unscathed!  We had a rockin' time at the Saturday tasting, with a number of new faces and venerable regulars (did we say that?) braving the storm to evaluate a this week's offerings.  See below for notes.

Summer is winding down, school is back in session and football season is about to kick off.   Although you still have a couple of days to take advantage of the Great Pinot Envy Sale -- buy any 3 Pinots and get 10% off, or get 15% off by the case (mix and match) -- we hope to broaden your horizons in September!  Stay tuned!!

Saturday Tasting -

Wines On Sale

The wines below will be on sale through Saturday, September 3rd:

Hurricane Irene did not stop our intrepid tasters from joining us for our regular Saturday tasting.  We had a busy store, with folks preparing for a long weekend indoors.  The mystery wine was a major stumper -- Connie came closest with her guess, but the identity remained elusive.

The identity of the Mystery Wine is:

Enotria Dolcetto 2007 (reg. $16.99) SALE $13.99
Dolcetto is a grape native to northwestern Italy and grows primarily in the hills of the Piemonte region. In Mendocino County, the Graziano family makes a wine that is a dark purple with inviting fruit flavors and aromas of blackberries, raspberries and dried cherries. On the palate these flavors mingle with undertones of vanilla oak and earth. The finish is complex and long lasting.

Other wines in the tasting included:

Domaine de Martinolles Le Berceau Brut Limoux NV (reg. $12.99) $9.89/9.34

Blanquette de Limoux is the world’s oldest sparkling wine, created by monks in 1531!  This Limoux is very typical of the style, with bright apple flavors and light, subtle yeast on the finish.  This is a fantastic everyday bubbly, especially at this price!

Fat Bastard Chardonnay 2010 (reg. $9.99) $8.99/8.49
This wine’s Chardonnay grapes are sourced from all over the Languedoc-Rousillon in Southern France.  Round in the mouth, with white flower aromas and a long, toasty finish, it is the perfect match with a variety of cheeses, poultry and cream sauce pastas.

Pikes The White Mullet 2008 (reg. $13.99) $12.59/11.89

This Australian wine is a Riesling,  Viognier,  Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc blend.  With a smoky, almond nose, it has a medium-bodied palate of zesty citrus, tropical fruit and a hint of musky perfume.  This is a white with very strong and distinctive flavors.

Pellegrini Olivet Lane Russian River Pinot Noir 2009 (reg. $21.99) $19.79/18.69

If you like cherry aromas and flavors, this Pinot is for you.  Hints of fresh strawberry and toast aromas come through on the nose.  The medium body of red fruits are touched with citrus and oak. Silky with refreshing acidity, it is extremely drinkable.

Chemin Des Olivettes Coteaux du Languedoc 2009 (reg. $12.99) $9.89/9.34

This French blend consists of Carignan (35%), Grenache (30%), Syrah (20%), and Mourvedre (15%).  It is easy to see why Wine Spectator gave this wine 92 points!  It is a powerful red with smoky notes over dark red fruit flavors (plum, black cherry).  A bit meaty in the middle, it has a broad finish of mocha and dark chocolate.

Les Hauts de Montfort Minervois 2008 (reg. $12.99) $9.89/9.34

The Les Mégalithes is an old vine Grenache from the Languedoc-Roussilon in France.  On the nose, blackberry and spice come through. Cranberry is found on the palate, with soft tannins giving the wine structure without being too dry.  Always a very popular wine on the tasting bar, this was a tasting favorite.
