We had a busy day, with a lot of folks at our tasting bar and many people preparing for Super Bowl festivities. The identity of the Mystery Wine is:
Pieropan Soave 2009 (reg. $18.99) SALE $16.99
We offered a bit of a stumper today in our mystery wine! This Soave, comprised of 85% Garganega and 15% Trebbiano di Soave, it has a delicate nose with floral hints. On the palate is a light apple note with crisp minerality. Zingy acidity makes this a great food wine! Other wines in the tasting included:
Leonard Kreusch Riesling Sekt NV (reg. $9.99) SALE $8.99
This tasty, dry Sekt (German bubbly) has apple and peach aromas and rich green apple, honey and peach notes on the palate. Dry, yet very fruity, it is a great alternative to a Prosecco or Cava. The wine ends on a crisp, slightly slatey finish.
Peter Lehmann Layers White 2008 (reg. $16.99) SALE $14.99
This aromatic blend from Australia contains Pinot Gris, Muscat, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay and Semillion. The Pinot Gris provides nuttiness and texture, the Muscat delivers aromatics, Gewürztraminer adds spice and mouthfeel, Chardonnay brings a touch of white peach and the Semillion provides a solid backbone.
Farnese Montepulciano D’Abruzzo 2010 (reg. $12.99) SALE $11.99
Garnet in color, this Montepulciano displays red fruit and prune flavors. Medium-bodied, tannic well-balanced and smooth, this is a great everyday red!
Domaine de la Mordoree Lirac Reine du Bois Red 2008 (reg. $39.99) SALE $34.99
This delicious Lirac received 90 points from Wine Spectator, and our tasters seemed to rate it similarly. A blend of equal parts Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, it has a dark, inky color and a deep, rich bouquet of cassis and blackberry, with a touch of coffee. On the palate is good acidity, ripe fruit and a long, elegant finish. Grab this great wine while it is on sale!
Grand Bateau Bordeaux 2009 (reg. $14.99) SALE $13.49
From the famous (and normally expensive) Chateau Beychevelle, this elegant Bordeaux consists of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, is aged partially in new oak barrels, and has luscious ripe red fruit flavors. If you want all the flavors of a great Bordeaux, but don’t want to spend a lot, this wine is a fantastic option.
Bodegas Norton Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (reg. $11.99) SALE $10.49
This Argentinian Cabernet has rich, ripe plum, blackberry and raspberry aromas and flavors. With a firm structure, balanced tannins and a smooth finish, it is a fantastic Cab to pair with red meats and dark chocolate.
